Journey
DJ Sliqe, born Lutendo Kungoane, is a Johannesburg-based DJ and producer who built his reputation in the clubs and street circuits of South African hip-hop before ever achieving mainstream recognition. By Grade 10, he had already become the resident DJ for school social events, laying the foundation for his future career. While studying Logistics at the University of Johannesburg, he immersed himself in Johannesburg’s nightlife scene and secured resident DJ slots at influential clubs such as Club Sway and Stones in Melville.
His breakthrough came in 2015 with “Do Like I Do,” featuring Kwesta and Flabba, a record that didn’t just perform well, but shifted his status from DJ to serious producer within the hip-hop space. The remix version, which pulled together some of the biggest names in the country, became a defining moment in his career and led to him becoming the first South African hip-hop DJ to win a SAMA for Best Remix in 2016.
DJ Sliqe leaned into collaboration as his identity. His debut release, "Injayam Vol. 1," in 2016 functioned less like a traditional solo album and more like a curated showcase of South African rap talent, featuring a wide mix of artists and styles across the country’s hip-hop landscape.
As his influence grew, so did his role behind the scenes. In 2020, he was appointed Head of Hip Hop and R&B at Sony Music South Africa, moving from frontline DJ to someone helping shape which artists and sounds get pushed into the mainstream.
